Serena and Venus Williams arrived Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial nerve
centre, on Tuesday at about 3pm (local time) with officials of ‘Breaking
The Mould’ campaign on hand to usher them into the west African country
for the first time.
The Williams’ sisters visit is part of a two-nation tour that will
see them play exhibition matches and train kids in a bid aimed at
promoting women’s rights.
The sisters who could only muster a few words to pressmen at the
airport on their arrival, were immediately whisked away by security
details. Serena and Venus, while in Nigeria, will visit two secondary
schools in Lagos on Thursday as part of an inspirational/empowerment
campaign of the girl-child in Nigeria.
They are expected to pay a courtesy call on Lagos state governor,
Babatunde Raji Fashola today, at Alausa, after which they will head to
the Ikoyi Club where they are billed to feature in a tennis clinic.
They will also play an exhibition match at the same venue on Friday before they jet out to South Africa.
