Obi Emelonye, Akin Omotoso Join Afrinolly Master Class
Obi Emelonye and Akin Omotoso join the MTN Afrinolly Master Class series this Saturday, as both award-winning directors discuss the portrayal of Africa in their movie plots. The filmmakers will be talking from a ‘diasporic’ perspective and the Google+ Hangout event will explore how Africa is portrayed and received in the foreign space.
The Hangout starts at 3pm on February 9th, with both filmmakers sharing their experiences about working abroad and having their films tour the international film circuit.
Emelonye is recently renowned for his box-office success with MIRROR BOY (shot in Gambia and starring Genevieve Nnaji) and LAST FLIGHT TO ABUJA, which deals with issues surrounding aviation safety in Nigeria and featured Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, Jim Iyke, Jide Kosoko, Ali Nuhu and Hakeem Kae-Kazim. Most of his previous and current works have also enjoyed cinema releases in the UK.
Omotoso’s MAN ON GROUND, a story about two brothers caught up in the South African xenophobic attacks of 2008 also stars Kae-Kazim and Fabian Lojede. Apart from being a director, Omotoso is also an actor and has starred in South-African TV series such as ISIDINGO and JACOB’S CROSS. His new feature MANO ON GROUND has been screened prominently at international film festivals in Toronto, Durban, London, and Berlin; a successful run for the film, which is currently showing in Nigerian cinemas.

Afrinolly Master Class strives to provide these Hangout events, so that people of all abilities, status and background can be inspired by and learn from masters of the craft.
Previous hangouts have featured New York African Film Festival’s Mahen Bonetti, The Black List’s Franklin Leonard, Tony Abulu (DOCTOR BELLO), Stephanie Linus (THROUGH THE GLASS), Femi Odugbemi (TINSEL, BARIGA BOY, MAROKO), writer/producer Emem Isong (EMOTIONAL CRACK), Charles Aniagolu (STREETS OF CALABAR) and Bongiwe Selane (EDGE OF PARADISE, DOCTORS’ QUARTERS).
