Eagles skipper Joseph Yobo will become the first Nigerian to reach 100
national caps if picked for Wednesday’s World Cup Group F game against
leaders Argentina.
But the Fenerbahce defender has insisted
victory against Argentina will be the top priority so much so that his
winning a record century of caps will only be a bonus.
“It’s good news that I will reach that
milestone, but what is uppermost in my mind is for the team to win and
for us to advance to the next stage. The rest will be a bonus,” he said.
Yobo won his 99th cap on Sunday in a crucial 1-0 win over Bosnia.
The 33-year-old Yobo made his full
international debut in 2001. He is featuring at his third World Cup,
having also appeared at the 2002 and 2010 tournaments.
Nigeria now need to only avoid defeat on
Wednesday in Porto Alegre to reach the knockout rounds of the World Cup
for the third time.
They are second in Group F with four points from two matches, two points behind leaders Argentina.
Iran are on a point and Bosnia, who lost
their first two matches, are already eliminated having not recorded any
points thus far.
Meanwhile, Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi
has asked Nigerian fans and media to stop being “impatient” and show
respect for their team, rather than write them off
