From wildcard to superstar, Moses grabs the N15 million Nigerian Idol prize

He did it. 22-year-old Moses Obi-Adigwe now reigns supreme, as the winner of Nigerian Idol season 3.

The sweet-voiced crooner who earned the nickname ‘Teddy Bear’ was visibly stunned and floored by the news that he was the last one left standing. As the pyrotechnics went off and the confetti fell, Moses expressed his heartfelt gratitude to his friends, family, voters and especially God.

His stunning climb to the top was capped by the most entertaining night of the year. With performances by the top 12, Mercy Chinwo, the everluminous Omawumi, and of course two legends of international acclaim – Femi Kuti and the one and only D’banj, the roof was blown off the top of Dream Studio thanks to the energy coming off the stage.

It may seem hard to believe that the lovable ‘Teddy Bear’, better known as Moses, was not an immediate shoo-in for the top 12 contestants in the competition. He was in the tough wildcard round, but the university graduate gave a heartfelt rendition of Back to Black by Amy Winehouse that saw him safely through to the next stage of the competition.

His initial audition in Benin singing One Night Only from the smash hit film Dreamgirls, floored the judges and made a memorable impression. Since then, his unique vocal characteristics that once saw him teased have now become his signature calling card, and propelled him into the top two. His drive and energy are tempered by his funloving personality, and now, having won the show, he hopes to kick start a brilliant music career…and maybe throw a celebratory party.

Moses walked away with a recording contract and cash worth an astounding $100,000, a car, and of course, the pride and honour of being this season’s winner.
