Prince Charles steals Obama's limelight in Tasmania

Barack Obama's victory dominated headlines across the world – except in the Australian state of Tasmania, where a visit by Prince Charles and Camilla relegated the United States election to the bottom of the front page.
Barack Obama's victory dominated headlines across the world – except in the Australian state of Tasmania, where a visit by Prince Charles and Camilla relegated the United States election to the bottom of the front page.
Tasmania's biggest-selling newspaper, The Hobart Mercury, featured the royal visit as its main front-page story
The royal visit, part of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations, brought thousands of people onto the streets of the island state and prompted steady cries of "Charlie, Charlie".
While newspapers across the country led with the re-election of President Obama, Tasmania's biggest-selling newspaper, The Hobart Mercury, featured the royal visit as its main front-page story.
"Welcome Charles & Camilla," read the headline, above a photograph of the smiling couple.
The newspaper's editorial was dedicated to the visit and recalled the "good-humoured banter, generous hospitality and conviviality" during the last visit by Prince Charles in 1994. It praised the Prince for being "ahead of his time" on issues such as organic food, urban renewal, rainforests and climate change.
"Considering the overwhelming goodwill that permeated the Prince's last visit, it is obvious that Charles would continue to be warmly welcomed to these shores whether or not this nation became a republic," the newspaper said.
